ABOUT THE TUTOR
I was born and educated in England and then emigrated to Canada in 1976. I have a B.Sc. degree in Physics, with Electrical Engineering and Math subsidiaries, from Birmingham University, England. As a teenager I learnt 5 languages, being English, French, Latin, German, and spoken Italian. In addition, I have taken a secretarial course for executive secretaries and also real estate courses
for both salesmen and agents, which included a contract law course. I took one year of an interior design course at Malaspina University College in Nanaimo, and I taught myself HTML a few years ago.
I started out in my working life as an assembler language computer programmer, way back in the days of the dinosaurs and the old mainframes. I have raised two children, and became a realtor for 12 years so that I could finish bringing up my children without babysitters. However, all my life I had wanted to have a farm, and
the day my youngest child left school, I stopped selling real estate and moved onto an acreage. Sadly, I had to give up my farm afer a few years, when I became allergic to my chickens. I have now turned my hand to tutoring, renovating old houses, and writing books and web pages.
ESL
I am on the Cowichan Valley School District's approved tutoring list as I have been tutoring Math, Physics and some Phonetic Reading in the Cowichan Valley for the last ten years. I am now living in Youbou, BC, but will travel to Duncan on a Saturday for tutoring in the library, until I can sell my house and move closer to Duncan again. A year ago, I was asked to tutor ESL, for several hours a week, to some Korean students who were visiting for the year. I adjusted the way I taught until I found a way which improved their spoken English quite fast. Now that they have returned to Korea, I have been asked by the parents of two of the students to continue tutoring them over the internet. I would like to find some more students to tutor using the internet, as I enjoy teaching ESL.
MATH, PHYSICS, PHONETIC READING
I have been tutoring Math, Physics and some Phonetic Reading in the Cowichan Valley for the last 10 years, and am on the Cowichan School District's approved tutor list. I am now living in Youbou, BC, but will travel to Duncan on a Saturday for tutoring in the library, until I can sell my house and move closer to Duncan again. I can usually improve my students' marks by about 20% to 30%, starting with the next test after they have been coming to me. This is not a guaranteed improvement, but it is quite common.
WRITERS' RESOURCE - SELF-PUBLISHING HELP
I have now self-published a book called "
How to Raise Day-Old Chicks in Your Back Yard" about raising day old chicks, and would like to help others self-publish by proof-reading, putting in chapter headings and indexing the book as necessary. They would then be ready to send their books to the printer. I am currently in negotiations with Storey Publishing for them to publish my chicken book and chicken house plans.
BASIC HOME REPAIRS FOR WOMEN
While I was working as a realtor, I saw many women on their own, who would have liked to fix the minor problems in their houses, but lacked the knowledge to do so. My experience on the farm, along with renovating my own homes over a 20 year period, has taught me to fix most problems in a house, and I thought it would be good to offer private lessons to other women wanting to fix specific problems in their own homes.
BEGINNING COMPUTERS and
HTML AND CSS
I taught myself how to use a modern computer, including word processing (MsWord and others), Windows, HTML and CSS about 5 or 6 years ago. I had already learnt to program in Assembler Language and RPG from my time on the old mainframes, but I obviously don't use those languages any more.
This is
my website, all written in HTML and CSS with a little JavaScript thrown in for good measure. I have had several friends approach me to ask if I would teach them how to use a computer, so I am offering tutoring in basic computers, and HTML web pages.
